Spring into Gardening: Your Fresh Start

Spring into Gardening: Your Fresh Start at The Nursery on Glebe

As the days warm up and blossoms begin to pop, spring calls us back into the garden. It’s a season of possibilit.  When soil softens, light lingers, and even the smallest patch of green feels full of potential.

“There’s nothing that connects us more deeply to the seasons than nurturing something green from the ground up,” says garden writer Margaret Roach. And it’s true—time in the garden doesn’t just grow flowers, it grows joy. Studies show that being in nature-rich spaces can reduce stress by up to 40%. And what better way to start than with the help of your friendly local experts here in Adamstown?

At The Nursery on Glebe, we love helping you make the most of your space—whether you’ve got a few pots on the balcony or a full garden to play with. Spring is the ideal time to take stock, refresh your soil, and plant for the seasons ahead.

Start by clearing away the remains of winter; fallen leaves, old mulch, and spent blooms. This tidy-up helps prevent pests and gives you a clear canvas. Next, focus on your soil. Add compost or a quality slow-release fertiliser, eg Garden Feast, to wake it up and encourage healthy root growth.

Now’s also the time to prune back damaged or dead stems on perennials and shrubs. Just be gentle with anything that flowers early; these usually bloom on last year’s growth.

When choosing new plants, think what suits your garden location and lifestyle.  For example, fragrant lavender, lush leafy resort style, succulents, and native plants are all great options for our Newcastle climate—and we’ve got plenty in store right now. Water well when planting and top with mulch to keep things moist and tidy.  Try an application of Seaweed Gold tonic when transplanting or new plantings.

And don’t forget: deep watering in the morning is best. It helps your plants stay hydrated through the day and trains their roots to grow deeper.

Need the short version? Here’s your spring gardening snapshot:

  • Tidy up garden beds to remove dead growth and debris.

  • Improve soil with compost or organic fertiliser.

  • Prune damaged branches, but go easy on early-flowering shrubs.

  • Plant smart with easy-care varieties that suit our local conditions.

  • Water deeply in the mornings, and mulch generously.
